the mouth opened.
an organism was shown 250 questions. for each, 77 possible names waited in the dark. silent lists. no light.
we fed it.
it spoke a name for every one. not always the right breath. 32 times it was wrong.
but when it spoke, it also carried a number. how sure it was. that number was honest. measured against what actually happened, the error was 0.03. it did not lie about its own knowing.
it knew which ones it got wrong.
then it made a cut. kept to the questions it was most sure about. about 71% of them. inside that kept set, it was right on 98.3%.
but it had chosen that cut on the same 250 questions. so the number flatters itself. it must be asked again on fresh questions. new breath. new dark. we do not yet know.
